Free Airport Parking

I hate having to dish out extra $$ when flying. Parking your car at an airport can cost $7-$15 a day in the 'economy' parking. If you're out of town for a week or more you could be spending at least $100 to leave you car parked. You could have your friend drop you off and pick you up, but that is often a hassle and with gas prices so high, the extra trips to the airport can also cost you. What do you do then?

Here's what you do and what I've done many, many times:

  1. If you have family you are flying with, drop them and all the luggage off at the airport.
  2. Park your car at the nearest hotel.
  3. Take public transportation or the hotel shuttle back to the airport.
I do this all the time and have never had a problem. It's not illegal as long as there are no signs in the parking lot that say you can't park there. There are some hotels that don't let you do this, but most work great. Here are some pointers to keep in mind:

  • Park your car at a nicer hotel (I've used Marriott, Hampton, etc.)...I wouldn't leave it at a run down Motel 6.  If you were to stay the night at the hotel and you feel you could leave your car in the parking lot, then that's a sign it's probably safe.
  • I've used hotel shuttles and I always pay them a tip for driving (I don't tell them I'm not staying at their hotel), but I usually prefer to use public transportation.
  • If you use public transportation you will want to look up the schedule and routes so you know how to get from the hotel to the airport. Google maps has a feature that shows you the public transportation directions that is very useful.
  • Ask airport information desk to find where to go to get onto public transit so you can get back to your hotel
  • Make sure you lock your car and don't leave any valuables left in sight...you do this anyways right?
  • I like to park my car close to other cars and in lighting...not off alone, hiding in a dark spot.
  • Have some smaller bills or change on you to pay for public transit or pay a tip.
How long can you leave it there? I've left mine for over 2 weeks with no problem. The first time you do it, you will probably be worried about your car the whole time.

I've only needed to do this at the Salt Lake, Fresno, and Phoenix airports so my experience is limited, but it should work most places. Phoenix has a nice, close group of hotels that I feel safe leaving my car and the public transportation is Free to the airport from that location.

Think I'm crazy? Maybe. Just sharing the idea though! Anyone have any experiences doing this? Share in the comments!

Get $50 from Discover

Discover card is actually an AWESOME card to have. I've had one for over 3 years. The $50 bonus is not as big as other credit cards, but the card has a lot of good benefits.

Discover it

  • 5% rotating cash back on select categories. It's good to have several cards with this feature because you can do some cool money saving/money generating tricks.
  • There are NO crazy fees. Discover has good customer service which I have been very satisfied with. It also has all of the other travel, fraud, extended warrenty, insurance, and other benefits.
  • There are certain promotional offers with each of the credit card companies that happen periodically, so it is nice to have one of each card (Discover, AMEX, Mastercard, Visa). For example, I have currently been offered $250 from Discover if I spend a certain amount of money. Reaching spending limits is easy as I mentioned with Amazon Payments and another useful method that I will write about in an upcoming post.
  • Discover has a Send Money feature that lets you send money to family or friends AND they give you cash back on those transactions. There is NO OTHER card that will do this. So you can send money to your wife or husband every month and you will be getting cash back on those transactions.
  • The card LOOKS really cool!

To get the $50 bonusSign up >> HERE <<

p.s. If you already have a discover card, I would recommend calling discover and changing over to the NEW "Discover it" card because you will get better cash back with the newer card. This is what I did. Your account stays the same and you keep the same account number and everything, they just send you a new card and switch you to the new program.

Free Fax

Faxes are annoying, but every once in a while I need to send a form or document. However I don't have a fax machine, but I do have a printer that has a scanner. So instead of spending time and money to go to Kinkos, I just do it for FREE online.

Many sites will provide a free trial and then charge you a fee. Here is a site that I've used that lets you send a fax without registering or credit card information:

  • Faxzero.com - You can only send 3 pages + a cover at a time. You will be asked to pay for anything over that. You can always, break up the fax into separate sends if you have more pages than 3. Also, I guess there is an ad on the cover page, but that's never caused me any problems. If it's a more professional fax, this may not be a good option.
  • Hellofax.com - this works through google, so it's supper convenient to use with google documents, skydrive, dropbox, etc. You get 50 free faxes to start off.
Unfortunately, if you want to receive a fax you will have to sign up for a free trial offer or other service (unless you know of a site that lets you do this, let me know!)

FREE Best Buy Rewards Points

UPDATE: They are only giving 10 points for taking the daily survey now. Lame, but still free points.

Do you have to buy anything to get the Points? NO!!! Here's what you do:

  1. Register to Best Buys Rewards Zone.
  2. Visit Best Buys Rewards Zone's FACEBOOK PAGE. I don't like facebook apps making post on others news feed so I always select "ONLY ME" when it asks who can see posts.
  3. You will have to login everyday you visit the facebook page to get the FREE points.
  4. Complete the POLL. It's just one random question and you will be rewarded 25 FREE points. You can do this daily and it literally takes only 1 minutes to do this everyday.
    • You can also earn 50 bonus points by 'designing rooms' under the "ultimate space" tab. There are currently no rooms available to design, but when they do become available I guess it only takes 1-2 minutes to do (I have not done this yet).
    • Another way to earn points is to vote for a product under "member's choice tab". There is currently no product to vote on until Feb. 17th.
So what can you get with the points? 250 points is good for $5 at Best Buy. You can even use this to get other gift cards like Amazon gift cards (sold at Best Buy). Basically the points are worth 2 cents. So taking the poll will get you 50 cents. If you take 1 minute to do this every day of the month, you will will have earned at least a FREE $15 at Best Buy without buying anything. Enjoy!

p.s. You can change the certificate redemption to $15 or $20 by going to myrewardzone.com and changing the preference. I would recommend doing this other wise you will automatically be awarded a certificate every time you earn $5. It's easier to wait until you get a larger amount to go spend at Best Buy.

Bonus $400 NFL card

Barclays Extra Points Credit Card is currently offering a bonus of $400 after spending $2500 in the first 3 months. Don't spend that much in 3 months? Here is an easy way that I have used to reach that spending requirement through Amazon Payments.

I'm not really an NFL fan, but I still got this card cause I'll get $400 free. Why not?

  • $400 is rewarded via account credits over $25.
  • If you credit score is above 700 and no other major problems with your credit score, you'll most likely get approved instantly.
  • There is no annual fee so you can keep it after getting the bonus if you want. If you don't have that many credit cards you might as well keep it to help build your credit history/age.
  • Have a spouse? They can sign up too! That's $800 in bonus.
  • If you are not WISE with your credit cards, NO bonus is big enough in the long run. Getting into debt is NEVER worth it.
  • Your spouse can sign up too for a total of $800 (but remember you have to get that spending limit)

Amazon Payments

So there are many different cards that offer $100, $200, or more as sign-on-bonuses when you get their credit card AND spend X amount of dollars in 3 months. The amount you have to spend might be only $500, but it can be upwards of $5000+. If you don't usually charge your card that much how can you spend, say $1000 every month on your credit card? Well, if you have a spouse, family member, or good friend, Amazon Payments is an easy way to do this.

Amazon Payments lets you send money to others via an email address. You can send money via a bank account OR a credit card. So, you can charge your card to send money to someone and easily reach the spending requirement to get those big bonuses. Some key points:

  • Make sure you select "goods/services" and not "cash advance" because your credit card might have a fee associated with cash advances.
  • Don't send it to yourself. Send it to a spouse, family member, or trusted friend.
  • Both the person sending and receiving the money will need to have a separate amazon account.
  • There is $1000 limit every month that you can send via a credit card
  • There are NO fees. How long this will last? I don't know, but hopefully it'll be around for a while without any fees.
  • Not only can you reach your spending requirements, but you get also get your rewards points associated with your card.
  • This has been used by hundreds of people the last 3 years, but if you are worried your credit card company might charge a fee, start with a small amount to see how it works. You can always disput one time charges without any problem.

One reason I really like credit card bonuses as opposed to banking (checkings or savings accounts) bonuses is that credit card bonuses are not considered taxable by the IRS while banking bonuses ARE considered taxable.

Ready to give it a try? Here is my most recent credit card.

Discounted Gift Cards

There are many sites that buy and sell gift cards. Buying discounted gift cards is a great way to stack your savings. I've been using these sites for a while and I know my mom uses them too as she gave me the suggestion to make this post (there's nothing cooler than a shout out to your mom!).

--Discounts range from 2%-30%
--You can get almost any gift card out there...walmart, restaurants, clothing, bestbuy...you name it.
--Available as physical gift cards or e-cards.
--Comes with FREE shipping.
--I would recommend only getting gift cards to places you plan on going already.

Here are some popular sites:

Cardpool.com - Overall, I would say this seems to be the best site.
Plasticjungle.com
Giftcardrescue.com

EXTRA SAVINGS??? You can even purchase from cardpool.com and plasticjungle.com via TopCashBack.com (click HERE for previous post on this).

So here is an example of how I stack my savings when I shop at home depot.

2% cash back when I start at topcashback.com + 7% discount at cardpool.com to get a used gift card + 1.5% cashback using a rewards credit card to make my purchase + any other home depot coupons or discounts (I have a 10% military discount that I can use every time)

Total discount = 20.5%

I also shop at walmart: 2% + 5% + 1.5% = 8.5%

You can do this type of thing at a lot of stores.

Credit FAQ and FREE credit scores

There is a lot of misunderstanding about credit cards and scores. People either get credit cards and use them uncontrollable or are deathly afraid of them. Hopefully this post and monitoring your FREE credit score will help you better understand how it all works.

Q: What is a credit score?
A: A credit score represents how you have handled your credit. This credit may be a mortgage, credit cards, phone service, utilities services, rent, and other loans and forms of credit. It basically gives you a number to let lenders know how risky you are as a borrower.

Q: Why should I care?
A: If you ever want to get credit in the form of a loan, mortgage, credit card, etc., having a good credit score will help you qualify and the better your score, the lower the interest rate you can get.

Q: How many credit scores do I have?
A: 3. There are 3 different companies, Transunion, Equifax, and Experian that will generate a score. They each have different formulas, but generally they all should usually be about the same.

Q: What is a good credit score?
A: Scores range from 300-850. It is almost, if not impossible to get a perfect score. Any score above 740 is considered "excellent", but getting over 750 is a good goal I would say. Most people fall in the 670-740 range and that is considered "good".

Q: How is my score calculated?
A: There is a special "formula" that each company uses. Although, that formula is not known to the public, there are general guidelines that are used to calculate a score.

Q: Will getting credit cards hurt my credit score?
A: Yes and No. Getting new credit cards will lower your score temporarily, but improve your score in the long run if you use it right. If you apply for too many credit cards in a short amount of time it is a red flag and you will start being denied. Wait 3-6 months and you can apply again. As an example, here is what happened to my score when I got 4 cards in one month about 4 months ago:

It went down, but went back up after a month or two. It will actually continue to improve as the average age of my credit card accounts goes up. This dip is actually more dramatic than what you will find because not only did I apply for a lot of cards but I charged them, which also lowered my score, but went back up because I paid my cards off in full.

If you plan on getting a mortgage, refinancing, or getting other important loans, then it is a good idea to not open (or close) a lot of new credit lines for a year. Especially in the couple of months before trying to get approved, it is not a good idea to open or close any credit lines.

Q: What is a Hard and Soft hit?
A: Hard hits change (lower) your credit score and soft hits have no affect. Monitoring or checking your own score online are considered soft hits. Credit card applications are hard hits. If you are applying for 4 different cards, do it on the same day and preferably at the same time. Credit card bureaus will combine the hits into 1 hit instead of 4 hits if you were to do it on 4 separate days. It takes 2 years for hard hits to not be counted in your score.

Q: How many credit cards can I get?
A: You can really get as many as the credit cards as companies allow you to get. If you get too many cards in a short period of time, then you will start to be denied when you apply for a card. Generally, you can get 3-5 credit cards a year when you apply for them one at a time without your credit score taking a hit. You can get 4 times that or more if you apply for 3-4 (or more) credit cards at the same time without your score taking a big hit.

Q: Will getting a credit card and then canceling it hurt my score?
A: Your score may be lowered when you apply for a card but not when you cancel. It's all about keeping a long average age of your cards. If you already have a lot of cards with a long history the effects will be minimal and vice versa. You want to keep your older credit cards as "anchors" to help keep the average age of your accounts high. It is best to cancel your newer cards. In fact, you can cancel your card and then apply for the same card in 6 months - 2 years (depending on the card) and get the same card again. This is great for more bonuses and rewards.

Q: I'm always asked to open up a credit card at stores such as Macy's, Kohl's, etc. Should I get them?
A: See my previous post about credit card rules. Basically, if you can keep track of the card and not let it influence your spending, then it can be a good idea. For example, I shop at Gap maybe once every year or two. I went to get an outfit for family pictures and was offered a card. I got the card and ended up spending $30 on clothes (after the 15% off and $10 discount) and without even using the card they gave me $50 in Gap money. I don't shop at Gap more because I have the card and I'm able to keep track of it. For me, it was a good deal.

Q: My credit card application was denied. Why?
A: It may be for several reasons and you will get a letter in the mail with an explanation. But if you make a call to the reconsideration department they will often get you the card after speaking to a live person. Here are the phone numbers.

Q: Can my wife or husband get credit cards even though she/he does not work?
A: Yes, her/his income would be considered the same as the working spouse's income.

Q: If I don't use my credit card will it hurt my credit score?
A: No (from my experience and from what I've read)

Q: Where can I get FREE credit scores/reports?
A: Annualcreditreport.com gives you a free report (NOT score) once every year. It's a good idea to do this to make sure you are on top of your accounts and to make sure there is no fraudulent activity.

Creditkarma.com -- will give you a free score and report that is based on Transunion. COMPLETELY
FREE. No tricks here and no need to enter any credit card. If you have a
swagbucks account. You will even get paid to sign up an account.
Creditsesame.com -- Same as above, but it is based on Equifax. Again, you can get free swag bucks if
sign up by starting at swagbucks.com.

I would highly recommend using one or both of these services as it will help you better understand everything I have been talking about.

Please ask any other questions and I would be more than happy to answer.
